Post-Processor Programming

The optimal connection between your CAM software and CNC machine for error-free manufacturing

Post-Processor Programming

What is a Post-Processor?

A post-processor is a specialized software component that acts as a translator between your CAM system and the CNC control of your machine tool. It converts the internal, generic processing data from the CAM system into a specific NC program that can be read and executed by the respective CNC control.

Core Functions:

  • Conversion of CAM data into machine-specific NC codes
  • Adaptation to different control types (Siemens, Heidenhain, Fanuc, etc.)
  • Consideration of machine-specific properties and limitations
  • Optimization of machining parameters for maximum efficiency
  • Implementation of specific formatting and conventions

Process Flow:

  1. CAD model is programmed in the CAM system
  2. CAM generates so-called CL-Data (Cutter Location Data)
  3. The post-processor translates this CL-Data into machine-readable NC code
  4. The NC code is transferred to the CNC control
  5. The machine performs the machining precisely according to the specifications

The Importance of a Well-Programmed Post-Processor

Precision & Quality

A faulty post-processor can lead to deviations between the CAM model and the actual workpiece. In contrast, a cleanly programmed post-processor ensures that the machine executes exactly the intended movements, thus achieving the highest precision and quality.

Efficiency & Time Savings

Optimized post-processors reduce manual corrections to the NC code, shortening setup times and increasing throughput. They maximize machine utilization through efficient tool changes, optimized traversing paths, and adjusted machining parameters.

Safety & Reliability

A reliable post-processor prevents potentially dangerous machine movements, collisions, or overloads. It ensures that all safety parameters and functions of the control are correctly addressed and that processing proceeds without incidents.

Economic Efficiency

The investment in a customized post-processor reduces waste, tool wear, and machine downtime. The optimized integration into the manufacturing process leads to a significant reduction in production costs and a faster amortization of acquisition costs.

Did You Know?

According to practical experience, many production errors in CNC manufacturing can be attributed to inadequately adjusted post-processors. Professional post-processor programming is therefore one of the most important investments in CNC manufacturing.
